Essex is divided into four wards. Ward 1 is Essex Centre, Ward 2 is Colchester North, Ward 3 is Colchester South, and Ward 4 is Harrow Centre.

The town has two minor hockey associations: The Essex Minor Hockey Association and the Harrow-Colchester South Minor Hockey Association.

Some of the major parks and attractions are: Point Pelee National Park, Fort Malden National Historic Park, Jack Miner Bird Santuary, Colassanti's Tropical Gardens, ERCA, Chrysler Canada Greenway, and Trans-Canada Trail.

Essex has had two major explosions. The first was on August 10, 1907 due to nitroglycerine leaking in a rail car at the Essex Train Station. The second occured on Febrary 14, 1980, when a town truck was bringing a gas tank truck and backed over a natural gas line.
