Windsor is the most southern city in all of Canada. Residents in Windsor are referred to as Windsorites. The city is known as the city of Roses.
Windsor was settled by the French Canadians in 1749 as an agricultural settlement. The area was first named Petite Cote which means Little Coast. Later it was changed to La Cote de Misere which means Poverty Coast because of the sandy soils near LaSalle.
After the American Revolution in 1794, the settlement of Sandwich was founded. It was renamed Windsor later after the town in Berkshire, England.
Windsor became a village in 1854, and then became a town in 1858. It gained its city status in 1892.
Windsor tourist attractions include: Caesars Windsor, Little Italy, The Art Gallery of Windsor, The Odette Sculpture Park, and Ojibway. Each summer, Windsor co-hosts the Windsor-Detroit Freedom Festival for a two week period. There is also a gigantic fireworks display on the Detroit river to celebrate Canada Day and the US Independence Day. IT is one of the largest fireworks display in the world. It attracts over 1 million spectators on both sides of the riverfront.
The city was a major entry point into Canada for slaves via the Underground Railroad. It was also a major source of liqour during the American Prohibition.
The University of Windsor is Canada's Southernmost University. St. Clair College is also in Windsor which makes it the most southern college in Canada too.
Windsor also hosted a round of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2009 and also 2010. Pylons were set up on the Detroit River right over the border between Canada and the USA making it viewable from both sides.
